Feminist Disney: Disney needs more sizes

“I don’t think it would be a good idea to make an overweight Disney princess. After all, they’re supposed to be role models, and you shouldn’t strive to be overweight.”

I’m normally fond of confessions and the mods running it seem intelligent and not rabid…

Shouldn’t we be teaching children that all of us deserve a happy ending? Not just the thin and beautiful among us? Why should a chubby little girl have to feel like she will never find her prince charming just because she’s not skinny like belle or jasmine? Or that she will never be able to achieve her goals and dreams because she isn’t skinny like tiana or cinderella? That’s hogwash. ALL little girls should feel good about themselves. ALL little girls should be able to have the hope of finding love, and the hope of one day accomplishing their dreams. EVERY LITTLE GIRL. NOT just the skinny ones. How DARE anyone think a role model can be anything but skinny. That is just so uncalled for!!!

Seriously though, Disney is watched by millions of children, most of them young girls dreaming of happily ever after. Sure, life isnt easy, and the real world is hard. But as children, they deserve to have hopes and dreams. They deserve to feel like one day they will have a happy ending. They deserve to have that hour and a half of pure bliss, so that when they have a hard time one day they can hope to someday be a strong beautiful and determined woman like the princess on the screen. There is no reason there cannot be a plus size princess for plus size girls. They deserve the magic of disney just as much as their peers. It is nothing but the pure ignorance of people that keep it from happening.

Obesity and Health Insurance.

I have to rant about this for a second. I work at the local newspaper, and recently, there was an opinion column and letters to the editor saying how people being overweight and obese is costing people who are not so, more money because their taxes go to the health care for these people.

Okay. So statistically, obese and overweight people have more issues with certain health issues than other people, therefore bringing up health care costs. Annnnd, how many other people raise the cost of healthcare?

Smoking. Drinking. Drug use. Stress. Bad oral hygiene. Lack of exercise. Over use of anti-biotics. Hypocondriacs.Eating anything that is processed, chemically treated, pesticide treated, ect.

How many of you “healthy” folk throwing the blame on fat people do any of those things? Probably at least half.

All of those examples are extremely common, and can also cause health problems(e.g. bad oral hygiene can cause bad cardiovascular health leading to higher risk of heart attack). So why do people feel the need to attack people who are fat? Everyone makes their own life choices, why does everyone have to throw stones at the easiest target of the moment?

Also, being overweight alone doesn’t automatically mean someone is unhealthy and always going to the doctor. I am fat, and I have been to the doctor a total of 1 time this year. And it was because I got an injury at work and was scared I had a blood clot because my leg felt really funny( I am overly paranoid and it ended up being fluid from the injury draining in my leg causing it to feel funny). That doctor visit was not because I am fat. Last year I went to the doctor a few times.

Anxiety attack. Sinus infection during allergy season. Do only fat people suffer from those things? No.

I really just wish people would stop jumping to judge others. Every person is different. Every body is different. Everyones predisposition to certain health problems is different. It isn’t right that anyone should feel less about themselves because society and doctors tear them down and lump them into one category. But I guess fat is the enemy of the moment. 2011 was the year of the war on smokers, 2012 is the year of the war on fatties. I wonder what next year will bring.
